Fossilized remains of a colossal prehistoric snake, named Vasuki indicus, were unearthed in Gujarat, India. This species, which lived approximately 47 million years ago, is estimated to have measured between 10.9 meters (36 feet) and 15.2 meters (50 feet) in length, making it one of the largest snakes ever discovered.
The fossils, comprising 27 vertebrae, were excavated in 2005 from the Panandhro Lignite Mine in the Kutch district of Gujarat. Initially misidentified as belonging to a crocodilian ancestor, further analysis revealed their true origin as a massive snake. The species was named Vasuki indicus, drawing inspiration from the divine serpent Vasuki in Hindu mythology, with "indicus" denoting its Indian origin.
Unlike other large prehistoric snakes such as Titanoboa, which were primarily aquatic, Vasuki indicus is believed to have been predominantly terrestrial or possibly semi-aquatic. Its vertebral morphology suggests a lifestyle similar to that of modern large pythons. The Naredi Formation, where the fossils were found, also contained remains of catfish, turtles, crocodilians, and early cetaceans, indicating a rich ecosystem that could have supported such a large predator.
