One Flash, One wall | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

What could you do with just one flash, a brick wall, and a model? Well, 10 years ago photographer Gavin Hoey made his very first Adorama TV video on that exact topic. Now he’s recreating the look to see how he would approach the same situation today, find out what's changed, and discover the many things that time and technology can't alter.

Just as he did in his original video, Gavin starts out by taking control of daylight exposure and then creates some dramatic directional light with an off-camera flash. Along the way, Gavin explains why he’s using certain light modifiers and how advances in camera and flash technology have altered the way he works.

Finally, Gavin takes the same wall and the same Flashpoint XPLOR300 flash but brings in some new ideas by changing his lens and light modifier. High-speed sync (HSS flash) takes care of the wide apertures while a small strip box keeps the area of light nice and tight, just like he had before. The big difference is a switch from hard light to soft light with gentle shadow transitions.
