Once the hazel is cut, Guy works through the fallen sticks one by one, picking each up using the hook of a billhook. Each is quickly assessed, cut if necessary and put into piles of product and waste. The long, flexible rods are left untouched and will become hedge binders or fence weavers; branched tops are pea sticks; all other reasonably straight rods are cleaned of side branches with the hook and drop into the product pile. These will become, bean poles, hedge stakes, flower stakes and lots of other products. Everything that remains goes into one of two piles - small diameter bits will go into faggots and the large bent bits, probably over 50mm diameter will end up as charcoal.
