«Sgraffito» ("scratched" in Italian) is an ancient technique used since classical times. To create her paintings, Montreal-born artist Isabelle Prince adapted this age-old method and made it her own. Her technique consists of applying layers of color and then scratching off parts of the top layer to create contrasting images, patterns and textures to reveal the colors underneath. Isabelle creates a sense of depth through a variety of gestural strokes that vary between smooth, flowing, staccato and rhythmic. Her movements translate into colorful arrangements of organized shapes and tangled lines which are floral, organic, crafty, fantastic... and a bit alien! Her unique process and artistic vocabulary is intended to harness raw energy to create within each piece an intimate world that possesses its own ethos and emotional range. Isabelle is an intuitive artist who strives for movement, harmony, and cohesive, complex compositions in her paintings.
