UK: Bilderberg summit under close watch by transparency campaigners

Anti-Bilderberg protests continued to rock the rural English town of Watford on Friday, as members of the global corporate and political elite met for the second day of talks in the luxury Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire. Around 140 powerful and wealthy participants from 21 European and North American countries are attending the four-day meeting, held between June 6 and June 9.

David Cameron courted controversy on Friday after a government spokesmen confirmed the British Prime Minister would be attending the summit. "He feels it is an opportunity to discuss economic issues with senior ministers, business people and academics," the spokesperson said.

Protesters say the forum acts as a way for a self-selected global elite to make decisions behind closed doors without the democratic oversight of the majority of the population. With so many elected officials in attendance, activists fear that powerful business interests can use the forum to exert undue influence on government decision-making.

Journalist from American Free Press Mark Anderson said: "Openness and transparency many are pursuing, they want to know what's going on inside, all of this secretive world planning along economic, political and military lines. But ultimately, we want to get beyond just transparency and to stop the idea of secretive government policy making."

Organisers bill the conference as a forum for "informal, off-the-record discussions" about major issues facing the world. Google chief executive Eric Schmidt, the UK chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos are among the VIP's expected on this year's guestlist. The names and affiliations of attendees are released to the press, although exact details of the discussions undertaken and possible decisions reached are ever made public, as press are barred from the event.

The agenda is set to discuss the acceleration of economic growth in Europe and the United States, the EU debt crisis, job creation, popular ideological trends, workers rights and cyber threats.

The Bilderberg group was founded in 1954 to bring the leaders of Western Europe and the United States closer to discuss Communism and European integration as the Soviet Union cemented its control of the Eastern bloc.
