Music for the Soul #31 – “I’m in His hands”
(Words and Music: Stanley E Ditmer)

Music is the language of the soul, it has a unique and special ability to connect directly to the soul to bring joy, soothe sorrows, relieve stress and stir the emotions.

In days gone by my Lord has always proved sufficient, why should I doubt? I am assured, I’m in His hands. He knows every hair on my head; all the days ordained for me were written before one of them came to be. The God who created the universe and put in place a plan of salvation for the whole world cares about me individually and holds me in His hand so I do not need to fear the days ahead or the things I cannot understand.

Stanley Ditmer was a creative musician and had the ability to write both simple, instantly appealing songs and also developed works to challenge musicians. His songs came from a vast and rich experience of service and devotion to Christ. This song was ‘born’ in 1956 as a chorus and a verse during a time of uncertainty and concern when young Stanley Ditmer was waiting for doctors to diagnose a mysterious illness. It was set aside and forgotten until he was asked to sing a duet with his wife at an officers’ retreat 6 months later, and he added another verse. The song resonated with those who heard it and many requested copies but he had none to give. A third verse was added and he sent his song to the New York War Cry and so commenced its journey around the Army world.

Psalm 37:23-24 “The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.”

1. I shall not fear though darkened clouds may gather round me;
The God I serve is one who cares and understands.
Although the storms I face would threaten to confound me,
Of this I am assured: I'm in His hands.

I'm in His hands, I'm in His hands;
Whate'er the future holds I'm in His hands,
The days I cannot see have all been planned for me;
His way is best, you see; I'm in His hands.

2. What though I cannot know the way that lies before me,
I still can trust and freely follow His commands;
My faith is firm since He it is who watches o'er me;
Of this I'm confident: I'm in His hands.

3. In days gone by my Lord has always proved sufficient,
When I have yielded to the law of love's demands;
Why should I doubt that He would evermore be present
To make His will my own? I'm in His hands!
