I took a lengthy lay-off from composing, and have recently got back into it. In the past, I composed my tunes on the piano and wrote them down on music paper as I went. Recently, I've lost the bug for composing, and writing on the piano never yielded anything that grabbed me musically. I decided to switch gears and start writing on the computer using my music notation software, MuseScore. This worked surprisingly well, and I quickly churned out 2 new tunes in as many weeks. "Full Steam Ahead!" is the second of the two. The first one I wrote titled, "Hopscotch" I intend to make into a video in the near future - although that melody is a lot more technically demanding than this one.

Composing is something that I've always loved to do, but so-called "writer's block" is a real thing and can be very frustrating to deal with as it can stop you from doing what you truly love. I've found the hardest thing about composing is starting with a blank page - no ideas, no inspiration, nothing to work with. Conversely, the easiest thing about composing is editing (or revising). Therefore, I've come to the understanding that the best course of action to avoid writer's block is to just put anything on the paper! Start with a chord progression, a simple melody or rhythmic device, and just write without putting too much thought into it. Fill the page up with a whole bunch of stuff that is sub-par at best, and keep what you like and discard the rest. Pretty soon you'll have a bare bones outline of a tune which you can shape and refine from there.
