How to kill a large rainforest tree by using a tree girdling method.
Girdling ... removing a strip of bark around the trunk is a great method to remove a tree that cannot be easily cut down. Here is why we did it.
A large tree in the rain forest with a crack in it is dangerous. Near two trails that are used very often by people, we made the hard decision to kill it with a slow method. The chainsaw was an option, but that process would be dangerous as well. We decided to girdle or ring-bark the tree to have a slow more natural death. Insects and other animals may have the chance to use the tree in a more natural process. The tree was also close to electrical lines, which was in jeopardy if the trees were cut. The other consideration that we had was the number of juvenile trees that would be killed or hurt in the collateral damage.

It was a difficult decision for sure, but one that we believe is the correct one as well.
