Brief Summary of the Book: The Wizard of the Emerald City by Alexander Volkov

In a distant land called Kansas, a girl named Ellie lives with her parents and her little dog, Toto.

One day, a terrible cyclone sweeps up their house and carries it far, far away — right into a Magic Land!

The house lands on the Wicked Witch Gingema and crushes her.

The Good Witch Villina says: “You’ve defeated the wicked one, and now you can go home — but your path lies through the Emerald City to the Great Goodwin.”

To return to Kansas, Ellie must put on the silver shoes and follow the Yellow Brick Road.

Along the way, she meets new friends:


Scarecrow, who dreams of having brains,


Tin Woodman, who longs for a heart,


Cowardly Lion, who wishes for courage.


Together they defeat sabre-toothed tigers, cross a raging river, escape the deadly poppies, and rescue the Lion from the evil Bastinda.
At last, they reach the shining Emerald City!
Goodwin turns out to be an ordinary man from Omaha, but he still grants:


Brains to the Scarecrow,


A kind heart to the Tin Woodman,


Courage to the Lion.


Ellie clicks her silver shoes three times — and they carry her and Toto back home to Kansas.
Her friends stay to rule the Magic Land, and Ellie promises never to forget them.
The greatest treasure is already within us.
Brains, heart, and courage cannot be given by a wizard — they are born along the way, when we help others and never give up.
And love, together with faith in ourselves, always leads us home.
