Wider Vantages Are Needed Now, Times 18 | A Symposium

Alvy Ray Smith was present from the beginning of computer graphics at Xerox PARC, the New York Institute of Technology, and Lucasfilm. He co-founded both Pixar (with Ed Catmull) and Altamira Software, which was subsequently acquired by Microsoft, where he went on to become the company's first Graphics Fellow. He has received two technical Academy Awards for the alpha channel concept and for digital paint systems. He is especially proud of having written the very first full-color (or RGB, or 24-bit) paint program, with 16 million colors, in 1975 on Long Island, an innovation that directly leads into David Hockney's iPad paintings.
