Note that since filming this journey Ormskirk services on the Northern line now operate through to Hunts Cross instead of Southport services.

Services on this route usually operate every 15 minutes for most of the day with a 30 minute frequency on this Northern line route in the late evening and on Sundays. From Kirkdale to Liverpool Headbolt Lane battery train services provide an additional 4 trains per hour to Central station. From Sandhills to Central Southport services also provide additional services providing 12 trains per hour on the core of the Northern line. At Moorfields there is connections to Liverpool Lime Street for mainline National Rail and City line Northern services. At Liverpool Central there are Wirral line connections to New Brighton, West Kirby, Ellesmere Port and Chester via Birkenhead Hamilton Square through the Mersey rail loop and tunnel. At Ormskirk there are Northern connections to Preston on the West Coast Main Line.

The rolling stock on this route is now entirely 4 carriage class 777 Stadler METRO electric trains with battery units on Kirkby Headbolt Lane Northern line services. Double length 8 carriage formations operate selected services. Previously 3 carriage class 507 and class 508 EMU trains operated all Merseyrail services.

This route is fully electrified using third rail electrification. This route is double track throughout with the exception of Ormskirk station which consists of a single platform and track with buffer stops for Merseyrail and Northern Train services.
