2006. Behind the scenes at London’s National Portrait Gallery on Press Day, before the Hockney ‘Portraits’ exhibition opens. Some mixed emotions. By now David had had many retrospectives but even for someone so busy looking forward he was encountering in amongst all those iconic images a roll call of dead friends. But Celia Birtwell, one of his oldest friends, was on hand - so too the TV presenters and journalists Kirsty Wark and Jeremy Paxman, plus a fan from Spain.

Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood – outside, in all weathers, through the seasons – culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors.
