Interview transcript:
Six months ago I tried to decide to get the best laser that I think is available in the market and I need the laser who is very fast, very precise, very prestigious and very efficient.
The SCHWIND AMARIS 1050 has several advantages over the competition and that's why, when we had to take the decision to acquire a new laser platform, we took our time. My father, we really analyzed all the important facts and, at the end, in a very deep analysis we finish saying truly that this was the best option for us.
I am accustomed to being very fast and efficient. One other thing that I need is a fast laser, very precise laser but also very efficient between eyes and between patients. This laser has a condition that you can calibrate every two hours, that means you don't have to calibrate every eye or every two or three eyes. This improves my efficiency dramatically and surgery. I can operate about between fourteen fifteen eyes an hour.
I really thought about how fast - and not only because of fast for doctor - but fast for the patient experience, I consider that if you can be fastest because you are very good because if the laser, the faster the laser is, the more technology you need to be accurate. And this has shown incredible results. So the fact that the laser has such a high pulse rate of 1050 Hertz makes that you need a very intelligent and smart tracker to follow it and this has 1,000 Hertz to follow the eye: the smart pulse technology. They [SCHWIND] have developed something that is very interesting, that compensates the angular incidence of laser beam, they compensate the intensity of the light beam so it's very very accurate and this has shown a better profile, very soft and better results. We are always measuring quality results. And third and I think it's extremely important the "SmartSurf". This new photo ablation that what makes it, the laser touchless impression for patient. The fact that something can be touchless is very, very impressive for patients because many, many patients are really afraid of femto or cutting the cornea. Here you're even not, you're not touching it. This has shown fast recovery, to be painless or at least just better for patient experience.
I was surprising hyperopia for example. I am very conservative in hyperopia and usually do not correct more around 2,5 or 3 diopters and now I moved to 4 and I know other people move more, but I don't need it. But 4 for me is a big improvement because I go from 3 to 4 diopters and we need incredibly good results, I'm very precise. The other thing that is important is the different ways that they have, is very flexible laser. You can use different things. Other thing that surprised me was the corneal wavefront, especially in patients with very high astigmatism, for mixed astigmatism. I use the laser for many, many things. I use it for any kind of refractive errors, even very low. For example, half dioptre of correction after, for example, I have phaco phaco multifocal and if I have procedure refracted error, I correct it. That I am, many time I do half dioptre correction with the laser. I trust, it is very reliable. The other thing that is very important is, for example, with the PERAMIS wavefront machine you can measure a photopic and scotopic pupil before the surgery and I use it to modify the size of the ablation for each patient that is personal.
If I had to mention three things, I will definitely mention how fast and accurate this machine is, and when you say fast it's really fast. It's a machine that you can correct one diopter in 1.3 seconds. Number two is the fact that this is something interesting, that it's not the typical pay-per-click, and that makes it very, very sexy for doctors because you know that it is your device and you are not working for the company, you are working for yourself. Of course, you need to do an initial investment and it's not like that, but then it's yours and you can really control your numbers for the future and make it very profitable. And three, that is very important, of course, patient experience. The fact that it is so fast and so accurate and has a lot of added value. It [the SCHWIND AMARIS] has features that other excimer lasers do not have. These guys [at SCHWIND] have been working for the last 20 years in excimer lasers and they are a very focused company and when you look for a partner because, at the end, the technology that you acquire will be in your clinic for many, many years, you need to feel comfortable that the people that you are working are focused in and are delivering better products and updates.
