How to Recognize the Spiritual Ego: A Hidden Trap

When people start to practice spiritual teachings it's not uncommon for the mind to sneak in the back door and take ownership of the teachings by developing an inflated sense of self as 'a spiritual person.'

The mind will go to extreme lengths to protect and defend its identity because it's greatest fear is to be nobody. That for the mind is equivalent to dissolution, which is its greatest fear. Therefore, viligance is required, as well as radical honesty, so that this kind of mind movement can be recognised if it arises. It's not helpful to make it wrong (that's the mind splitting itself into two and judging itself). All that's required is to notice, witness and allow it. When you see that it's not you and has nothing to do with you there's no need to fix, change or eliminate it. The seeing itself allows for disidentification to occur and then the mind movement is no longer a problem and nor does it act out unconsciously,

Signs to look out for if the 'spiritual ego' has taken up residence is if there's a compulsion to talk about 'me and my spiritual experiences', if spiritual teachings are being pushed on to others, or if the mind feels a sense of being 'right' and the need to defend the teachings. There can also be a sense of feeling superior to others and a subtle looking down on others in order to feel a fabricated sense of self-worth.
