This is a tutorial for how to self launch a kite on land safely.

Land Launch Sequence:

-Preplanning/Pre-Flight Check
o Know what direction you’re going to launch and walk to set up your lines and launch the kite
o After you have identified the wind direction and pumped up your kite, rig up your lines directly downwind from the kite.
o Make sure you have a nice clear and open area, there are no obstacles, other kites or people downwind from your launch zone or in the area.
o Lines are attached correctly, and bridle lines are not tangled or twisted, lines are attached to the correct ends of the bar and kite and they are set up so the bar is directly downwind
o Make sure you remove all debris or sharp shells in the launch zone that may be on the beach or land

-Attached chicken loop to harness

-Walk in an arch around the kite and keep slight tension on the inside lines

-While walking keep tension on bar slider and lines to hold chicken loop on harness hook

-It’s important to keep slight tension on your lines and walk into position without to much slack in the lines

-Walk to a launch position so your lines are starched perpendicular to the wind and the kite is slightly downwind of you.

-If the kite is upwind of you, it will not fill with air and rotate properly into the launch position.

-Once your lines are perpendicular to the wind and you’re in launch position you can walk backwards to get some more tension in the lines.

-As you walk slowly backwards the kite should start to rotate and fill with air.

-Then start pulling the back bar line or high side upper control line of the kite.

-As the canopy starts to fill with air, apply tension as the kite slides, pull the line slightly so the kite fills with air and rolls into potion

-Then apply a little more tension on the upper control line so the kite flies into the air.

-As the kite lifts from the ground, it releases some tension from the upper control line and let the kite fly into the air.


Tips:

-Don’t over steer the kite when launching. Let go or release tension prior to the kite launching off the ground.
-If you think you’re going to be overpowered, you can depower the bar so you’re not overpowered when you launch.
-Try to avoid self-launching in high wind, above 30-35 knots
-You might want to have one hand on the safety ready to eject just in case something goes wrong.

Land Launch with Anchor Sequence:

-Secure your anchor firmly into the ground. Ensure the anchor is deeply embedded in stable soil or sand to withstand the kite's pull.

-Set up your bar, lines and anchor point so that the lines are perpendicular to the wind direction.

-Link the kite bar’s chicken loop to the anchor with a carabiner, double-checking that the connection is tight, the carabiner gate is fully closed, and the lines are secure.

-Once you have connected the kite to your anchor, then go to you kite and move your kite to the correct launch orientation in the wind window.
-The kite should sit on its own at the edge of the window and you can then walk back to your bar.
Connect your bar chicken loop to your spreader bar then disconnect from the anchor.
-Once you are disconnected from the anchor point, apply some tension on the upper control line so that the kite starts to fly into the air.
-If you do not have an anchor point to secure into the ground, find an anchor point in your area.

-Secure anchor points can be signs, fences, lifeguard stands, etc…
