COLUMBUS (Ashley Yore/Chelsea Spears) -- You'd never know it from the constant smile on his face, but Peter Broeckel struggles to stay cool.

"Because of the type of cerebral palsy I have, direct sunlight makes me violently ill so I can't easily go outside," Broeckel said.

He's blessed with a large family under his roof, but that also means a hot home.

"We now have six people in the family now. Even though I'm on the budget plan at AEP, I'm paying over $200 a month in electrical bills. I'm hopeful with the fan we can lower that amount," Broeckel said.

He's received a free fan as part of a LifeCare Alliance program to keep Central Ohioans cool when summer can be suffocating.

"Franklin County has not had a heat-related death in the last five years. Cities our size or smaller or whatever in the Midwest area average between 10 and 50 heat-related deaths a summer," the President and CEO of LifeCare Alliance said.

The goal is to collect 4,000 fans this season and to hand them all out to people like Peter.

The ABC 6 Fan Drive is Friday.
