The Union Home Ministry has issued a formal protocol for the national song, Vande Mataram, mandating a six-stanza version lasting three minutes and 10 seconds at official government events. This marks the first time in 75 years that specific guidelines regarding duration and rendition have been prescribed, applying to flag unfurling ceremonies and the arrivals and speeches of the President and Governors. The move coincides with the 150th anniversary of the song's publication in 1875. Reacting to the mandate, Congress MP Imran Masood stated, 'Vande Mataram was sung Guru Rabindranath Tagore in the Congress convention, and Congress sings it,' suggesting that political attempts to use the song would 'backfire.' The directive addresses historical debates regarding stanzas previously omitted, including those referencing specific deities. The protocol aims to establish clear rules for the national song, similar to those governing the national anthem, ensuring a standardized manner of singing during key ceremonial occasions across India.
