On October 5, 2023, at approximately 1:50 a.m., police in O’Fallon, Illinois responded to reports of a vehicle that had crashed into a ditch in a residential area.

Officers encountered a woman later identified as Hazel, who appeared disoriented, agitated, and possibly intoxicated. What began as a routine crash response quickly escalated after officers discovered a minor inside the vehicle.

According to police, Hazel admitted the car was hers but showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, unsteady movement, and evasive behavior. She repeatedly avoided basic questions about her identity, residence, and how the vehicle ended up in the ditch, at one point stating she had no identification and initially refusing to provide her name. Officers also noted her increasing frustration and confusion as the encounter continued.
