Volvo 850 Restoration - You Shall Not Rust Part 1 - Day 6

It’s time for some much-needed rust treatment on the Volvo 850. We started with treating all the wheel wells and next we tried removing the completely rusted out tow bar assembly. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a hell of a job. Of course, all bolts were rusted tight so after about an hour of toiling on six screws we decided to remove the back bumper first so we could start treating the chassis. This of course revealed even more rust. Luckily only on removable parts but getting them of the car won’t be easy. Due to the setback with the tow bar assembly bolts, we were not able to remove it this day or treat the chassis just yet. We sprayed all the bolts (and will keep doing so) with penetrating fluid so we’ll hopefully be able to remove them easier the next time.

For treating the rust, we followed the steps below:
• Grinding down until we reached bare metal
• Degreased the affected surface
• Sprayed on rust converted and primer
• Reapplied spreadable sealant
• Sprayed on two layers of anti-gravel coating

Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate.
He always maintained the car accordingly and had many parts replaced. Luckily, the full documentation is still with the car and only a month before passing away in December 2011 he put on the winter tires himself.
The Volvo has a big emotional value for me personally as I drove it with him on his final journey. Seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts.
Now after nine years we finally got our hands on the car and brought it back to its home where me and my youngest brother will restore it to its former glory and make our old man proud.
We intend to make a road trip once its restored and keep it in the family for as long as we can.

General Information -
We intend to document the whole restoration for ourselves, for people close to us so they can follow our progression and for people interested in restoring cars or specifically a Volvo 850.
