The film tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York who lived in the mid-19th century. He was married and had two children, and worked successfully as a violinist. One day, Solomon was tricked into working in Washington, where he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He was transported to the South, where he ended up on the plantation of a cruel slave owner. Solomon tried to explain that he was a free man, but his statements were ignored, and he had to hide his past to avoid cruel punishment. Under slavery, he experienced physical and psychological trials, saw injustice and the suffering of other slaves. Despite this, Solomon did not lose hope for freedom and looked for ways to contact family and friends in the North. For twelve years, he served various masters, trying to maintain his humanity in a world where it was not recognized. Hope for salvation appeared when he met a free carpenter from Canada named Bass. He listened to Solomon's story and agreed to pass the letter on to his friends in the north. After much effort and legal proceedings, Solomon was freed. He returned to his family, but the harsh experience of slavery changed his life forever. The story of Solomon Northup became a testimony to the cruelty of slavery in America and an inspiration for the fight for human rights.
