He campaigned to end the practice of Sati, a Hindu funeral practice in India in which a widow sacrifices herself by sitting atop her deceased husband's funeral pyre (fire).

One of his first contributions was to start schools for impoverished children where they were taught reading, writing, accounting and Christianity.
