BMW F850GS Adventure Off Road review from KNOX

Having had the bike for the last 3 months, it was time to put the big girl through her paces off road trail riding here in the Lake District… and that we did!

What did we find, well surprisingly, for a machine that weighs the best part of 250kg, the BMW 850GS Adventure rides great and the super plush on road experience you get with the F850gs translates to the rough stuff too. Super plush, very planted and incredibly comfortable, eating basic trail work for breakfast and we found it a real joy to ride! And the Enduro mode… it’s fantastic!

However, as we anticipated, on harder, more technical and tricky terrain, the F850GS Adventure reaches its limits pretty quickly and the margin for error when it starts to go wrong is pretty slim. Only riders with great strength, height and/or skill can really handle a bike like this on harder terrain in our opinion. For everyone else, it’s great, just have your expectations in mind, go a bit easier and ride with someone who can help you out of a sticky point every now and again!

On the plus side, the 850GS adventure has phenomenal crash protection, we dropped it twice during our loan of the bike and there was not a single mark on it, fantastic suspension, great turning circle and in Enduro mode, the engine is absolutely fantastic and combined with super light clutch, makes modulating the 95hp on offer very manageable.

We also put in a cheecky 50-80mph (ish) roll-on acceleration test between for the BMW F850GS vs Husqvarna 701 Enduro on the way home. Although the 701 Enduro is down on power in comparison, the 100kg weight saving clearly made a difference as it won in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. Just an interesting comparison.

We are real fans of the 850GS adventure and have loved our time with the bike, I’ll probably end up owning one in years to come.
