For a long time, it was assumed that the actual papyrus scrolls that Joseph Smith had were lost. Many believe they perished in the Great Chicago fire of 1871. After Joseph's death, his widow Emma had kept the mummies and papyri. They were eventually sold and ended up in a museum collection in Chicago. But in a remarkable twist, in 1966, several fragments of the Joseph Smith papyri were found in the archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met, realizing the significance, turned these papyrus fragments over to the LDS Church. In November of 1967. Suddenly, for the first time in over a century, we had the actual source material that Joseph Smith had labeled the Book of Abraham. And now Egyptologists, including LDS scholars, could directly read them. This launched a whole new phase of investigation. One fragment was immediately identified as the original facsimile number one, the very papyrus scene Joseph had copied and published. Sure enough, it showed the lion couch scene with portions missing, including the head of the standing figure and parts of the altar. This fragment had Egyptian hieroglyphic writing around it. Scholars, including eminent Egyptologist Dr. Klaus Baer at the University of Chicago, translated those columns of text in 1968. What did it turn out to be? Well, it was the opening of the breathing permit of Hoar, a type of funerary text often placed with a mummy.
