A seismic event is taking place in the center of East Africa that has the potential to permanently change the continent's topography.

The East African Rift Valley divides the African plate into two uneven sections, the Somali and Nubian plates, and extends more than 3,000 kilometers from the Gulf of Aden in the north to Zimbabwe in the south. The unexpected appearance of the enormous fracture in south-western Kenya revealed activity along the eastern arm of the rift valley, which runs along Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
