This project is based on the reality of the Montado as a diverse mosaic in which trees, soil, animals and humans collaborate and support each other. Herdade do Freixo do Meio, in Montemor-o-Novo, is a powerful example of the coexistence principle embedded in VAGAR, the Alentejo way of being and living.

Taking a non-dominance position, and fully aware that humans are but part of the system (a precious ecosystem that must be preserved and improved) on this ‘piece of the planet’, Herdade do Freixo do Meio looks for alternatives to the monoculture model through mixed systems such as agroforestry.

According to Alfredo Cunhal Sendim, who has managed the property for 32 years and has developed multiple scientific research projects in partnership with universities that are implemented in the field, "the tree is the centrepiece."

The main source of inspiration is the Montado. The head of Herdade do Freixo do Meio believes that the European Capital of Culture has the potential to truly be a catalyst for change in the territory because of its capacity to "shake up the cultural and social fabric."
