In this week’s Update, I break down why proposals that single out entire communities are not just unlawful—they create fear, fuel hate crimes, and strip people of their dignity.

We’ve seen this pattern before. When leaders use words that dehumanize, violence follows. Calling any country or community “less than” sets the stage for real-world harm, and it’s especially troubling for Somali communities in Minnesota and Michigan who are already facing elevated risk.

We can debate policy all day, but we cannot normalize language that turns human beings into targets. Do what’s right, not what’s easy.
