Many of you are likely familiar with groupers (ikan kerapu). But have you encountered the hybrid grouper? This isn't a different species, but rather a new type created through a cross-breeding process (kacukan) by researchers at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

In a groundbreaking achievement back in 1996, UMS researchers successfully bred two grouper species for the first time ever, resulting in the world's first hybrid of its kind.

This remarkable cross between a giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) and a tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) earned the well-deserved name: Sabah Grouper.

Where to See the Sabah Grouper

Head to the Marine Aquarium & Museum at UMS in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah! Here, you can witness this marvel firsthand in one of their massive super tanks.
