The detention and deportation of tennis champion Novak Djokovic has recast a light on Australia’s punitive detention policies, which have seen more than 3,000 asylum seekers forced into offshore camps for over nine years.

Refugees held in Australia's offshore detention centres have committed suicide, been killed by local security or left to languish without hope of ever seeing freedom.

We spoke to some of those still held indefinitely about the violence and trauma they have experienced, and why Australia needs to end these practices.
