Overall Construction: Attila is a very compact sturdy game. First off, this game comes in a metal tin with a vaccu-formed insert. The insert can be a bit of a problem as the pieces will only go in one way and the space for the scorched earth tiles makes it difficult to take that last couple of tiles of it out.

The board pieces are a nice, thick, & sturdy pressed cardboard with basic graphics on one side and black on the other.

The six pieces are a carved wood with decals on them. They are a solid 1 piece design, so there are really any parts to break off of it.

The rulebook is a single fold booklet with easy to follow instructions and images that show clear examples of board setup and legal moves.

Gameplay: Attila is a quick and easy to play game. Basically set up the board in a configuration both players can agree upon, although the first time you may want to set it up in the base rectangle. Each player will place the 3 units of their army along the side of the board closest to them.

A turn is 2 things: move a solider in the same fashion that you would move a knight in a game of chess. Then place a scorched earth tile. Play until one player no longer has a legal move.

Note: If you play with non-square board set-ups (i.e. a pyramid shape), you can make a move over empty spaces as long as you maintain the L shape movement and can land back on the board.

Yes/No Recommend: I honestly think you could play this with a 5 year old as a good primer leading up to chess. Be careful where you place your scorched earth tiles, as you may need to move into that space. If you want a quick, simple, modular, & easy to learn game that doesn’t take up a lot of table space, then this is a perfect game. Unlike dice games, which usually meet these same parameters, you don’t have to worry about losing parts due to them rolling off of the table.
