NASA has projects under way to study 3D printing for construction on the Moon and Mars using autonomous robots. This includes a recent grant specifically for construction on the Moon. Construction needs include landing pads, blast shields, roads, and habitats. We also review the status of the CHAPEA/Mars Dune Alpha project, a Mars analog (Mars base simulator). The habitat was constructed on Earth, by 3D printing using a variation of Portland cement mixed with crushed lava. Construction was completed, and numerous issues were identified. It seems unlikely that water-based cement would be used on the Moon or Mars. So, current work focuses on techniques involving melting regolith to some degree.
