Описание к видео Wheat School: Harvest management practices to maximize ROI

As combines roll out across the Prairies, harvest management becomes a key focus for farmers looking to protect grain quality while maximizing efficiency.

In this Wheat School episode, Rory Cranston, technical strategy lead with Bayer speaks with RealAgriculture’s Amber Bell, about tactics to help growers get into the field sooner and protect returns.

One of the most important steps, says Cranston, is scouting. This year’s dry start followed by timely moisture has sped crop development, which makes timing critical. “You really kind of want to shoot for that 14 and a half percent moisture on your grain,” he says, noting that higher moisture adds costs in drying, storage, and fuel.

Pre-harvest aids also play a role. Cranston stresses that glyphosate should be viewed as a harvest aid rather than a desiccant (it's a herbicide), as its purpose is to clean up green weeds that can delay entry into the field. “You can have a dry crop and green weeds, and that prevents you from getting into the field,” he says. Tools such as spot-spraying or precision sprayers can help target green patches while reducing input costs.

Cranston also points to stand density and canopy management as important considerations, not only for yield, but also for moisture use and drydown. Looking ahead, monitoring forecasts and staying flexible will help growers make timely decisions.

As harvest ramps up, Cranston offers encouragement: “It’s always exciting when you actually get to see that coming into the bin…enjoy the excitement, but be safe doing it.”
