Should you buy meme stocks like AMC and GameStop (GME)?

AMC and GameStop are slowly losing to the competition. AMC has to compete with video streaming services like Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Prime Video, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount Plus, and the list is growing. Services like HBO Max and Disney Plus released dozens of movies on their streaming services the same day as the theater release. Movie theaters are open now, yet streaming services are still releasing content on the same day as theater releases. In June, AMC announced they would be selling their own shares for the 2nd time that week. They also issued a warning that said investors should be prepared to lose a significant portion if not their entire investment. As of June, AMC is over $5 billion dollars in debt. And have millions of dollars worth of unpaid rent.
We’re seeing a large shift to digital games over physical ones. Services like the Epic Games Store, Steam, Uplay and Origin, allow you to buy games digitally, then download and install them immediately after purchase. Sony and Microsoft have similar stores where you can also purchase and download games directly onto your PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Sony and Microsoft literally released the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and the Xbox Series S, which don’t come with cd drives! And they’re cheaper! Analysts also suggest that, in as little as six years, digital game sales could entirely dominate the video game market. Analysts further suggest, COVID-19 was not the reason for rising digital media sales, but it did accelerate a trend that’s been growing throughout the last console generation.
A survey conducted by the Motley Fool tells us that meme investors are generally inexperienced. Beginner investors typically make decisions based on emotion. Meaning, if there’s a ton of hype in buying a particular meme stock, the fear of missing out will drive them to make the purchase.
On the flip side, if everyone is panic selling, the fear of losing money will drive them to sell.
Hoping your investment will grow due to hype and viral social media trends, is a terrible expectation to have. Some people will make a lot of money, but they are the minority in this case. I do not recommend trying to get rich quick, as this involves high risk. And if it were easy, everyone would do it, then it wouldn’t be easy anymore.
As of June, over 80% of AMC shares are held by a broad base of retail investors with an average holding of around 120 shares. This shows that the average investor can compete with these large financial institutions like hedge funds. It’s also cool to help companies that are struggling because regular people like you and I work for these companies. Just keep in mind, most companies will throw you under the bus if it means they stay in business. I recommend looking out for yourself first.
If it were me and I had a significant portion of my portfolio invested into AMC and or GameStop. I would sell, for all the reasons I talked about earlier. Especially if I’ve held the stocks for at least a year. Otherwise, I’d have to pay a higher tax rate on my gains. If I had a small portion invested, I would just leave it and see what happens.
If you really want to invest into something that’s high risk high reward, I would invest in the common cryptocurrencies. If you invested $100 into something like Dogecoin 5 years ago, you’d have over $100,000. At least the technology that powers certain cryptocurrencies has a bright future.
