Scythians, Sarmatians, Alans, Cumans, Mongols, and later the Cossacks were steppe warriors who defined the character of Ukrainian statehood and identity. This history challenges entrenched stereotypes and reveals Ukraine as the heir to a powerful steppe civilization.
