The Center for Biological Diversity is celebrating its fifth annual virtual Food Justice Film Festival Oct. 23-26.

This year's festival will feature four documentaries highlighting links between food sovereignty, agricultural heritage, social justice, and the environment.

For this virtual interview, we are joined by Leah Penniman — author of Farming While Black, farmer and co-owner of Soul Fire Farm, and main subject of the film Farming While Black.

Film Synopsis:
Featuring Leah Penniman, farmer and co-owner of Soul Fire Farms and author of “Farming While Black” and her compatriots, Karen Washington, a pioneer in urban community gardens in New York City, and fellow farmer and organizer Blain Snipstal. The film examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the United States and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots. Directed by Mark Decena.
