Описание к видео SULLIVAN as a Family Name Meaning and Origin

The great and illustrious Irish (O)Sullivan family is descended from Eoghan Mór, father of the famous Oryor Orme, the third century Munster king. The Mac Carthys, O'Keeffes, and O'Callaghans are the other prominent families of Munster Eoganacht descended from the above-mentioned Eogan, but the (O) Sullivan surname is the most widespread in Munster. This surname is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic "O'Suileabhan". The Gaelic prefix "O" stands for "male offspring," and the more personal surname Suileabhan has been variously interpreted as "hawk-eyed" or "one-eyed." Several members of the family were lords near Cahill (Tipperary) before the Anglo-Norman invasion; after 1200, the family spread into counties Cork and Kerry, dividing into two main clans, O'Sullivan Mole and O'Sullivan Bear. The chief of the former was based in Kenmare Bay, County Kerry, while the chief of the latter was based in Kenmare Bay, County Kerry. The latter chiefs were lords of Bear and Bantry. Owen Rua o Sileavan (1748-1784) was a great lyric poet, and Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera was of Irish descent. The first recorded spelling of the family name is Donal O'Sullivan Beare, 1560-1618, as recorded in the "Records of Bantry Bay, Dunboy" during the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), known as "Good Queen Bess" She was the hero of the siege of Danboy. Over the centuries, the surnames of all countries have continued to "evolve," often producing surprising variants from the original spellings.
