This Aircraft Detection System notifies users about any aircraft flying over user's location. It is based on the fact that all commercial (and private) aircrafts broadcast 1090 MHz ADS-B signal containing information about an aircraft's GPS location, altitude, ground speed and other data to ground-stations and other aircrafts. This system includes a 1090 MHz antenna which picks up the ADS-B signal from aircrafts near you, this RF signal is then amplified, filtered and passed as an input to Raspberry Pi 4, which has demodulator that decodes the ADS-B signal. AWS IoT Greengrass Core running on Raspberry Pi has a custom written component which processes the decoded signal-data, extracts required aircraft-data, calculates distance between the aircraft and user's location and publishes a message to AWS IoT Core over MQTT. A rule is setup in AWS IoT Core to pass the message received over the MQTT topic to an SNS topic, which is subscribed to by an SMS channel. Finally User receives a text SMS with: Flight number, Altitude (in feet) and distance (in miles) between aircraft's position and user's location. This setup is able to detect aircrafts within 20 miles radius from the user's location.
