Seventeen years after its release, I’m finally sitting down with Lost Odyssey, the 2007 Xbox 360 title from Mistwalker. Directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, with music by Nobuo Uematsu and story contributions from Kiyoshi Shigematsu, it’s essentially the “what if the original Final Fantasy team made one more big turn-based epic” game I somehow never touched.

Kaim’s thousand-year journey, the dream sequences written as proper short stories, the deliberate pace of classic turn-based combat—everything I love about the genre is here, and I’m going in completely fresh.
