Chapter 3 in the Lewis University Philip Lynch Theatre dramaturgy presentation for Lauren Gunderson's "Silent Sky." The focus here is on the principles of Astronomy found in the play.
Silent Sky, written by American playwright Lauren Gunderson, will stream performances on February 18-21, 2021. The play is recommended for patrons 13 years and up. Evening performances are 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2:30 p.m. In addition, there is a matinee performance at 3:30 p.m. on February 20th. Ticket prices are $13 for an adult, $12 for students and seniors. Lewis students pay $3 with an ID. Running time of the show is approximately 90 minutes.

Henrietta Leavitt (played by Katie Horn of Sturgis, MI) opens the play stating to the audience: “Heaven’s up there, they say. ‘Pearly clouds, pearly gates,’ they say. They don’t know much about astronomy, I say.” Silent Sky is set in the 1900s through the 1920s and is a dramatization of a woman’s journey through life, love, and fighting against societal and workplace norms for women.
As the play begins, Henietta is leaving her traditional home and her sister, Margaret (played by Kyra Savage of Romeoville), in order to pursue a job in astronomy at Harvard Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Upon her arrival, Henrietta joins a group of “computers” who are in charge of charting the stars. She soon finds out that the women are not allowed to touch the telescope or express an original idea.
Williamina Fleming (played by Haley Marchewka of Rockford) and Annie Cannon (played by Saenovia Poole of Bolingbrook) help teach Henrietta how to channel her curiosity and measure the light and distance of stars. While working all day, and sometimes all night, Henrietta tries to balance her dedication to science, her family obligations, and the possibility of love. Other members of the cast include: Alex Schedel of Bolingbrook.
Philip Lynch Theatre Director of Theatre Kevin Trudeau of Chicago directs the “luminously beautiful” play. Assistant theatre professor and designer Andrew Nelsen of Joliet designs minimal scenery and uses void spaces with a focus on elegant lighting by student designer Julia Egizio of Plainfield. Resident costumer Celeste Mackey of Joliet has conceived costumes to illustrate the 1900s fashion. Working behind the scenes are John Kladis of Palos Hills (stage manager), Kate Sanders of Milwaukee, WI (assistant stage manager), Lukas Roy of Palos Park (properties manager), Amber Harold of Bolingbrook (properties assistant), Austin Jones of Steger (sound design and board operator), Julia Egizio of Plainfield (light designer) Jamel of Gillispie (body microphone operator) and Dave Pomatto of Naperville (assistant technical director).
