🦴 Lesser Wing of the Sphenoid:

Provides attachment for the tentorium cerebelli

Contains the optic canal, transmitting the optic nerve (CN II) and ophthalmic artery

🦴 Pterygoid Process:

Projects downward from the sphenoid bone's junction between the body and greater wing

Divided into two plates:

Medial pterygoid plate: Ends in the pterygoid hamulus, a pulley-like projection guiding the tendon of the tensor veli palatini., contributes to the lateral wall of the nasal cavity

Lateral pterygoid plate: provides attachment for pterygoid muscles important in mastication

Forms part of the pterygopalatine fossa and infratemporal fossa

Intervening Pterygoid Fossa:

Lies between the medial and lateral plates.

Contains the medial pterygoid muscle
