Exploring an Abandoned Mental Asylum: Patients Tortured in Cells

In this episode I’m exploring the abandoned Laconia State School, a former mental institution for the developmentally disabled in New Hampshire. The asylum opened in 1907 and was originally designed to provide care and education, however over the decades became infamous for neglect and mistreatment of residents. Once closed, the facility was then transformed into Lakes Regional Facility, a minimum security State Prison that operated up until 2009.

Laconia State School, located in New Hampshire, was established in 1901 as a facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Originally named the New Hampshire School for the Feeble-Minded, it aimed to provide care, education, and training for its residents. Over the decades, the institution faced criticism for its treatment of residents, particularly during the mid-20th century when societal attitudes toward disabilities began to shift. By the 1970s, as part of a broader movement toward deinstitutionalization, the school’s population declined significantly, leading to its eventual closure in 1991. The historical site now serves as a reminder of both the progress made in the treatment of individuals with disabilities and the challenges that remain in ensuring their rights and dignity.
