The 2020 Mississippi Spelling Bee, an annual event sponsored by the Mississippi Association of Educators and broadcast at MPB, is the state finals for the 93rd Scripp’s National Spelling Bee.

The event took place at the MPB Television studios in Jackson, Mississippi on March 10.

This year’s winner is 13-year old Eesh Majithia, a seventh-grade student at St. Andrew’s School in the Madison County School District. His parents are Vikas and Deepika Majithia, and his favorite hobbies include playing the piano and tennis.

Majithia out-spelled more than 40 students from across the state and will compete for a chance to become the nation’s top speller during the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. later this year.

The first runner-up is Matthew Simpson, an eighth-grade student at Saint Stanislaus School in the Hancock County/Catholic Diocese of Bay St. Louis School District. His parents are Sam and Janet Simpson, and he enjoys swimming, math and playing video games.
