P4: PM Cowboy Podcast
Topic: What Corporate & Military Leadership have in Common.
Guest: Col. Bruce Stacy (ret.). Financial Management Executive

• Organizational Structure
• Processes
• Governance
• And Training
…have always been an essential systemic means of managing tribes, armies, empires and ultimately today, corporations, organizations and nations.

Empires have always grown and fallen through their military supremacy, so leadership, organizational structure, processes, governance and Training Programs had to be perfected in military settings. Military conflict has always been the test ground for what makes an organization effective and efficient, because the Law of the Fittest applies here like nowhere else.
What society has learned about LOPGA has been primarily learned from the military. No matter how "civil and civilized" we try to be, military LOPGA is deeply embedded in today’s organizational DNA. Of course, it has been adapted and watered down, sometimes for the better, sometimes with mediocre results.

I have always been a proponent of having an in-depth and historical understanding of things, because this allows us to perfect the LOPGA that best suits our needs. I believe that the military is one of the best schools for profoundly understanding LOPGA. It is also a great school for understanding the essential, if paradoxical, nature of a Matrix Organizations. A successful military organization has always been a master of both predictive and agile scenarios.

Even with my limited exposure to the military (approximately 3 years), I learned so much about management, organizational structure and efficiency and LEADERSHIP from it. In all the years since, working in multiple corporate settings, I could never escape the feeling that so much of what corporations do right is copied from the military, and so much of what they do wrong, they could improve, by learning from the military.

No private organization I have ever seen has the same commitment to leading and developing leadership than the US Military.

In this Podcast, I interviewed one of my early mentors, Col. Bruce Stacy, a career officer in the US Army and my former Professor of Military Science, and commander of the Reserved Officer Training Corps at TCU where I was a cadet.

After his retirement from the Army, he went on to have a long-time secondary career in corporate finance. He is a perfect candidate to discuss leadership similarities and differences between the military and private industry.

He was and is an exceptional, if sometimes contentious, leader of men & women. A man, that most that worked for him swore total allegiance to and followed unwaveringly. He is courageous, decisive, a consummate trouble shooter, always clear in his vision and mission, an outspoken personality, a grandiose marketer, a contagious motivator, an outstanding mentor and a great man. Of course he is not without fault, but I rarely got to experience those.
