Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in the United States on Sunday.

It's the first state visit by a Chinese leader in 12 years.

Jiang Zemin's plane landed just after 1900 GMT at Hickam Air Force Base on Honolulu, Hawaii, for a one-day stopover en route to a meeting with President Bill Clinton.

The president was welcomed by a U-S delegation headed by Admiral Joseph Prueher, commander-in-chief of the U-S Pacific Command.

Jiang was given a 21-gun salute and reviewed a military honour guard as several hundred people from Hawaii's Chinese community waved American and Chinese flags.

Following the arrival ceremony, Jiang travelled in a motorcade to Pearl Harbour to place a wreath at the U-S-S Arizona Memorial.

It's the site where hundreds of U-S sailors perished during the Japanese attack on the ship during World War II.

He also was to attend a luncheon hosted by Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris, who returned last week from a trip to China, and a state dinner at the residence of Governor Benjamin Cayetano.

A Taiwanese group planned to demonstrate outside the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel, where the luncheon was being held.

The Hawaii chapter of Amnesty International and the International Campaign for Tibet planned a protest at the governor's mansion during the dinner.

Jiang's trip is the culmination of strenuous diplomatic efforts by both sides in the past year to improve relations strained by issues from Taiwan to human rights, trade and nuclear proliferation.
