India vs South Africa 4th T20I Called Off

The much-anticipated 4th T20 International between India and South Africa, scheduled for 17th December 2025 in Lucknow, was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to extremely poor visibility caused by dense fog and smog at the Ekana Stadium. After multiple ground inspections, match officials decided conditions were too unsafe to play, disappointing fans and raising fresh questions about scheduling international fixtures in northern Indian cities during winter months when smog is common. India currently leads the five-match series 2-1, with the final game set to be played in Ahmedabad. 

This cancellation spotlights a growing concern for outdoor sport and athlete health amid seasonal air pollution. Air Quality Index (AQI) measures how clean or polluted the air is — with values below 50 considered “good” and safe for all outdoor activity, including high-intensity sport. AQI between 51–100 is moderate but may affect peak athletic performance, while values above 100 can impair lung function and reduce endurance during exercise. At extremely high levels (e.g., above 200–300), even short bursts of intense physical effort can pose serious health risks. 

In parts of northern India this winter, cities have recorded hazardous AQI levels, often above 400 — far beyond safe limits for athletes and spectators alike. Such conditions not only disrupt sporting events but also raise broader public health concerns, as heavy smog increases respiratory stress and can negate training benefits for elite competitors.
