This unique art form dates back to the 11th century, originating in the rice paddies of the Red River Delta, where villagers performed puppet shows over flooded fields. Today, the tradition lives on in a theatrical setting—right in the heart of the Old Quarter.

Set on a water-filled stage, the show features beautifully carved wooden puppets that glide, dance, and dive through the water to reenact legends, rural scenes, and folk tales. Watch dragons breathe fire, farmers herd ducks, and the mischievous jester Chú Tễu bring laughter to the crowd—all performed by puppeteers hidden behind a bamboo screen, waist-deep in water.
