“This is a vivid blue diamond, which is already extremely rare. You know, we see very few of these come up for sale at auction. So then, furthermore, to have something that is almost 10 carats is exceptional. This is one of the best blue diamonds that we've seen for sale at Christie's. The colour is a very rich, deep blue hue. So therefore, it's something that we're very excited about.”

“You know, often we do see loose stones come up for sale at auction, and that leaves the imagination to the eventual buyer as to how they would like this thing to be mounted. This is a ring, you know, speaks very much also to the Asian taste. And, you know, our Asian collectors that have seen the ring so far think it's, it's a beautiful design. So, you know, it really depends on on who the owner was, as to why it's mounted in the way that it is. But, you know, we, we also like this mounting, and that's why we've, we've stayed with it.”

But what we do know is that the colour of this stone is extraordinary, and it's a once-in-a-lifetime, you know, stone for any real collector, the estimate is at 20 to $30 million dollars (USD).”

A vivid blue diamond which experts say is of the most exceptional quality will go on show in Hong Kong next week, ahead of an auction where its expected to fetch up to 30-million dollars.
The pear shaped stone weighs 9 and a half carats.
STORYLINE:
This is the last chance people will have to see a diamond of such rarity on show.
Experts in precious stones say it's of the most exceptional quality.
The diamond was named after and belonged to American heiress Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon.
She was famous for her philanthropy and as a horticulturist and garden designer.
She was a friend of Jackie Kennedy and gained fame for designing the White House's famous Rose Garden in Washington DC in the 1960s, as well as landmark heritage sites in France.
Auctioneer Christie’s refers to the diamond as the “Mellon Blue”.
The sale will be held in Geneva Switzerland 11th November.
This stone, which is internally flawless, is geologically rare, according to Max Fawcett, Christie’s Global Head of Jewellery.
The Mellon Blue diamond was last seen publicly in 2014 when it was offered at an auction in New York.
Fawcett describes the stone as a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.
