Fun History:
How the 1812 Overture became a patriotic American anthem played at just about every firework show across the United States of America on the 4th of July...

The 1812 Overture, its full name: 1812 Festival Overture, for orchestra in E-flat major, Op. 49, was composed in 1880 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon resulting in his retreat from Russia. It premiered in 1882 for the consecration of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.

In 1891, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky conducted a performance of the 1812 Overture at the dedication of Carnegie Hall in New York City. It was the first time a major European composer conducted in the USA.

The work was well-known but had nothing to do with U.S. history until 1974 when Arthur Fiedler programmed it for the televised Boston Pops July 4th concert. The performance included cannons, bells, and the fireworks display on the Charles River. It became a staple for the Pops Independence Day concerts and continues to be performed as the finale for the fireworks all across The United States of America.

Arthur Fiedler is best known for his 1976 (America's 200th Birthday) performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with the Boston Pops Orchestra at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts.

The performance:
Fiedler led the orchestra in a jacketless, demonstrative performance of the 1812 Overture on July 4, 1976, during the U.S. Bicentennial celebration. The performance was accompanied by cannons, fireworks, and church bells from St. John the Evangelist Cathedral.

The audience:
The performance drew a crowd of nearly half a million people, setting a Guinness Book World Record for the largest crowd ever assembled for a classical music concert.

The legacy:
The success of the performance led to the 1812 Overture becoming a staple of the July 4th program, and the tradition continues today.

The video:
The video of Fiedler's performance is one of the most iconic images of the country's 200th Anniversary celebration.

Arthur Fiedler (born December 17, 1894, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.—died July 10, 1979, Brookline, Massachusetts) was an American conductor who was maestro of the Boston Pops Orchestra for 50 seasons, from 1930 to 1979 and is the best-selling classical conductor of all time; his recordings with the Pops sold some 50,000,000 discs, establishing the group as a national icon.

This music video song version of the 1812 Overture was performed by The U.S. Army Band.
