The slip hitch is an easy knot that is typically used for boat fenders but can be used for anything.

Attach the fender to the line. Wrap the bitter end of the line around the railing.
Next, flip the end of the line back over the railing once more, leaving slack to pull a loop through. Pull a bite in the rope through the slack and cinch down, pulling the knot tight.

The slip hitch is easy to release by pulling the bitter end of the line.
