In recent weeks, the Israeli media has been reporting on alleged tensions between Greece and Israel, mainly in light of the security situation and protests in several Greek cities. We believe it’s important to present an accurate and balanced picture based on facts, and to clarify that the ties between the two countries remain strong and stable.
Let’s start from the end: after disproportionate fear-mongering in the media, and even a specific warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the so-called “Day of Rage” against Israelis who simply wanted to vacation turned out to be nothing more than an inflated media balloon (thankfully). Yes, there have been a few isolated protest incidents against Israelis in recent weeks, and it’s no secret that until the 1990s, Greece maintained a relatively pro-Arab policy and did not have full diplomatic relations with Israel — but for more than 30 years now, the opposite has been true.
In the 2000s, especially after the deterioration of relations between Israel and Turkey, Greece and Israel began rapidly strengthening their ties. Since then, the two countries have been engaged in extensive and deep strategic cooperation in many areas: tourism, energy, real estate, and security. Joint natural gas projects in the Eastern Mediterranean highlight the mutual understanding of the importance of these relations for regional peace and stability.
Greece was among the first countries to offer aid to Israel after October 7th, especially when many flights carrying Israelis from around the world landed in Athens, which opened an air bridge to Israel. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was also one of the first world leaders to arrive in Israel.
In addition, it is important to emphasize that Israeli investments in Greece, including in real estate, continue at full strength. Despite media noise and public reactions, there has been no significant change in the economic relations between the countries. Israeli entrepreneurs and investors continue to operate in Greece without disruption, and both governments remain committed to encouraging foreign investment and maintaining regulatory and economic stability.
Furthermore, public reactions and protests in Greece usually reflect internal disagreements and do not represent the country’s official policy. They have not altered the diplomatic and economic atmosphere between Greece and Israel. Spokespersons for both the Greek and Israeli Ministries of Foreign Affairs have made it clear that there has been no change in official policy, and both sides continue to maintain open and constructive dialogue.
It is also important to remember that the security situation in the Middle East is complex and dynamic, but Greece and Israel remain committed to close cooperation aimed at maintaining stability and peace in the region as a whole.
In conclusion, behind every report and reaction are real people and a genuine partnership built over many years. At HOMEGA, we have been active in the local Greek real estate market since 2016, and despite occasional challenges and tensions, our personal and business relationships with the Greek people, including chambers of commerce, remain strong and based on mutual trust and respect. This trust is what enables both nations to continue building a shared future — even in difficult times.
Let us maintain patience, sound judgment, and a broad perspective, and remember that relationships between people and nations are built not only in times of peace, but also when facing challenges together.
