The SCMP's Senior Asia Correspondent Bhavan Jaipragas and Malaysia Correspondent Tashny Sukumaran sat down with Malaysian ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the morning of June 11 to discuss domestic politics and the state of the Malaysian economy, the post-Covid19 world order and regional geopolitics. The wide-ranging 75-minute interview also touched on controversial happenings in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad corruption scandal trials, the downfall of the Pakatan Harapan government resulting in a new administration led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, the role of race in Malaysian politics and Mahathir's views on his on-again, off-again rivalry with opposition stalwart Anwar Ibrahim. The 94-year-old also spoke about the impact of fracturing US-China ties on the region, the Black Lives Matter protests in the US, and how he sees the American presidential election playing out.
